Moomin was an excellent series when it was shown on the BBC in the early 1990's. The show is based on a collection of books and a comic strip by Finnish author Tov Jansson, which were originally published in Finnish an...展开d Swedish. An anime series, it was made in Japan and lasted for two series consisting of one hundred and four episodes in total.
The series tells the story of a family of trolls who live in a house in Moominvalley. The various members of the family are always getting into trouble and often embark on a new adventure in each episode, along with their many friends. Moomin, the main character, is a spirited teenager who lives with his parents, Moominmama and Moominpapa. He has a crush on the Snork Maiden, his beautiful friend and is also friends with her brother, Snork.
Along with these characters, there are also many colourful supporting characters too, including Sniff, a kangaroo-like creature who is friends with Moomin; Snufkin, Moomin's best friend, an adventurer who goes south every winter and returns in the spring and finally, Little My, Snufkin's half sister, a tiny, disrespectful girl who always gets what she wants but can also be a good friend when she wants to be.
The show is wonderful for younger children and will enchant them with its beautiful animation and eccentric characters. It has a very old fashioned feel, because of the period settings - the Moomin family home is very traditional and Moominpapa wears a top hat and has a cane - but will still appeal to a modern audience because of its enduring universal themes of childhood, friendship and adventure.
It is filled with adventure, magic, thrills, frights - the Groke still has the power to scare after all these years, despite simply being a lonely woman - as well as friendship, family and romance. The show is a must see!
