Driven tells the story of Sam Callaghan, a young man who has found himself the sole provider of a family left to him by his deceased criminal father and an older brother who has spent much of his life in jail.
Old beyond his years, Sam has had a steep coming of age becoming surrogate father to his sister, his brother’s wife, their children and his widowed mother. Even his best friend Jimmy looks to him for guidance. His responsibilities and a sense of morality instilled in him by his catholic upbringing have given him aspirations of finding an honest means to a good living.
Sam inadvertently causes a situation which leads to riots on the estate where they live. In the midst of his guilt at the chaos he has caused for the community, Sam and Jimmy meet Hanna, a breath of fresh air. Escaped from East Germany as a child, Hanna seems to have been everywhere and done everything and her vivacity lights up their drab town. For these two boys who have never left the North East she represents another world.
As the date of this brother Ritchie’s homecoming looms, Sam’s world is about to be turned upside down. Sam is determined that this will be his brother’s final time inside, this time with Sam’s guidance he will go straight for the good for the family. Having trained as a skilled mechanic, Sam has been saving up money, working overtime to buy the car garage he hopes will become a family business. When Ritchie has other ideas, Sam is torn between the hint of a better life that Hanna brings, and the predestined future he has always been trying to escape. Either way, the decision will shape his life forever.
