But although they led the Premiership for much of the campaign, injuries and suspensions caught up with the teams and a loss of form saw Manchester United pip them to the Championship. In Europe too they failed to achieve their potential but victory in the FA Cup over Southampton ensured that they didn't end up without a trophy.
